Independence Days - Graphic Medicine

Earlier this year I worked with the brilliant Greater Manchester Youth Network, to help them create a learning resource comic book (Graphic zine, Graphic Medicine; it has a few names) all about the experiences of young people living in supported accommodation. The GMYN do amazing work with young people, and it was great to team up with them again for this project.

In association with Cottongrass Homes, the team ran a series of 'snakes and ladders' game sessions, encouraging young people to tell their stories and share experiences to help others coming into the system. This was then taken and developed into a 12-page story, using direct quotes from the sessions. My job, working with Gary from GMYN, was to live scribe the game sessions and turn the outcomes into an engaging visual story.

Here's some of the artwork;

The process of putting the story together was done without a script. Just the simple premise of two young people taking a moment to share their thoughts, and some paraphrasing 'glue' to join together words and sentences spoken in the game sessions. I used my signature clean line illustration style, as well as my long-time experience making comics to tell the story visually.

Read more on the GMYN's own blog post here, and read the full graphic zine here.
